Chlamydia is the most reported communicable disease in the United States. Chlamydia often shows no symptoms, resulting in a high infection rate particularly among the young. By avoiding detection and therefore treatment it is highly communicable and has serious health consequences like infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease for women.

The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends a minimum of annual screening for people at high risk, and for pregnant women.

One of the most common sexually transmitted diseases is Chlamydia. This infection is often passed on to sexual partners because there are no symptoms often. The numbers are quite staggering. In the U.S. alone there are 2 million people with the disease. The number of cases worldwide is reported to be around 350 million.

As many as 75% of female infections, and 50% of male infections, go unnoticed until diagnosed due to lack of symptoms. When symptoms occur they are usually noticed within 3 weeks of contact and can include the following: abnormal odorous discharge from genitals, painful periods, bleeding when not on period, abdominal pain with a fever, painful sex, itching or burning, pain while urinating, and pain or swelling around the testicles.

Left untreated chlamydia can cause various conditions depending upon the sex of the party infected. In women it can cause: pelvic inflammatory disease which can do damage to the fallopian tubes or even cause infertility, increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy, it can cause premature birth and the infection can be passed from mother to child during childbirth. When passed from mother to child during childbirth there can be an eye infection, which can cause blindness or pneumonia in the newborn. In men the infection can cause: an infection of the urethra, an infection of the epididymis, or an inflammation of the rectum.

There are some very simple and effective ways to prevent chlamydia including: the use of condoms every time you have sex, limited number of sex partners, abstinence, and if you think you are infected restrain from having sexual intercourse until you are checked.

If diagnosed with chlamydia your doctor will prescribe antibiotics. With treatment the infection should clear up in about 1 or 2 weeks but it is important to complete the antibiotic cycle even if you begin to feel better. You should also be rechecked 3 to 4 months later to ensure the infection is cured.
